About us

PPBI was created in 2010 with the initial name of Post-Graduate Program in Biology of Interactions (PPBI) aiming to train scientific researchers (MSc and PhD levels) who understand molecular, cellular and systemic biological processes. PPBI also offers a holistic and multidisciplinary view in several areas of biology (eg Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Computational Biology) with interconnections with other areas such as education and science dissemination (eg.  by the production of teaching and scientific inclusive materials). In 2012, our identity with Biotechnology was enhanced and we changed our name to Post-Graduate Program in Science and Biotechnology (PPBI).

The program still has its original holistic and multidisciplinary views but now contributes knowledge and expertise to the development of Biotechnology. Our trained professionals are able to develop entrepreneurial, applied and innovative projects aiming to fullfil local and global needs and enhancing opportunities of research and publications in the area of Science and Biotechnology. In addition to formal classes and courses, our training programme includes activities related to research and teaching, with weekly seminars, conferences, teaching and learning activities, developing products and patents, and writing articles for publication in scientific journals, which help disseminate our activities and provide access to the knowledge generated.

PPBI - Infrastructure

PPBI is composed of more than thirty laboratories and multiuser installations, including a biotherium, chromatographic analysis and sterilization centers, together with other equipment and technologies necessary to develop research in biotechnology and other interface areas such as Virology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, Applied Microbiology and Parasitology, Pharmacology and Clinicical Research. The PPBI academic and professional knowledge as well as its technologic resources are available for collaborations, training and consulting services in Science and Biotechnological.

PPBI Relationship with Institutions and Business Enterprises

PPBI has several collaborations and is open to receive proposals for collaborative projects in partnership with institutions, businesses and industries, always assuring data protection and registration rights and patents. For more information about our graduate program, partnerships, consulting or courses, please contact us.

PPBI Collaborations - Nationals and Internationals

The Post-Graduate Program in Science and Biotechnology (PPBI) provides  its students the opportunity to interact with other excellent research centers in Brazil and worldwide. Thus, our professional will have the opportunity to meet new and current approaches and methodologies from the most modern science, especially during the doctorate degree. Countries like Portugal, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Colombia, United States, and others are part of the list of international collaborators, as well as businesses enterprises such as PlastLabor and Biosys and public institutions such as Embrapa and Fiocruz are included in the  PPBI National collaborations.

PPBI and Scientific Dissemination

PPBI also contributes with teaching and learning of Sciences and Biotechnology as it has one specific line regarding Scientific dissemination with an inclusive perspective. Based on this perspective, didactical materials and teaching and learning technologies are produced approaching scientific themes for students with special educational needs including  those with visual or hearing disabilities or high skills.

PPBI Pedagogical Structure

The Post-Graduate Program in Sciences and Biotechnology (PPBI) offers post-graduate courses at the Masters and Doctorate degrees. The program includes 23 projects and adds in a research program whose core is the understanding and application of knowledge about the interactions at different levels (molecular, cellular and systemic) that constitute the whole functional organism, leading to professionals with a broad perspective able to apply knowledge.

Biotechnology is a multi- and interdisciplinary field that demands different skills. Thus, the formation of new Masters and Doctorate training keeps these additional requirements in focus.

Our programs have 18 permanent staff and 5 collaborators, forming a single area: Molecular, Cellular and Systemic Interactions of Biological and Biotechnology Processes, divided into three lines of research (1. Identification of new prototypes and Bioactive Molecules; 2. Molecular, Cellular and/or Systemic Analysis of Biological and Biotechnological  Processes; 3. Development of New Strategies in Teaching-Learning Processes in Science  and Biotechnology) containing numerous projects.

PPBI aims to train researchers to understand, in a unique way, the importance of the interactions that shape living beings and their biological processes with a multidisciplinary view of several areas of biology (eg Genetics, Cell Biology and Molecular and Computational Biology), with interconnections to other areas. This perspective, not only deals with the organization of organisms, especially humans, but also with the diseases that affect this process and the response to stimuli from the environment at the molecular, cellular, tissue, or systemic levels.

The words of Leonardo da Vinci "...Realize that everything connects to everything ..." summarizes the goal of the program. It uses an intensive institutional capacity in terms of availability of Professors and infrastructure for the formation of researchers, contributing decisively to the direct development of our institution and society.

The Post-Graduate Program in Sciences and Biotechnology has effective actions aimed at: a) promoting education and research  to boost the development of science, technology and information, both in the State of Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere, and b) is working in strategic areas with generation and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge ranging from basic research to applied areas such as nanotechnology and biomaterials production.

PPBI was also designed in line with the National Postgraduate Program established by the MEC (Ministry of Education) and the goals of our University. This new program has the following objectives:

- To qualify the professionals from different regional locations in different levels of understanding of the interactions present in living organisms and  to supply the lack of specialized human resources in this area;

-To train teachers to raise the quality of undergraduate education in biological sciences. Enabling the training of scientific and technical professionals to design, plan, operate and monitor projects aimed at disseminating knowledge of the biology of conservation and sustainability, using natural biological resources.

The graduates of this program will be trained to develop innovative and applied projects appropriate to the needs and possibilities of research and teaching in the biology of specific regions.

Classification of the Program by CAPES

The PPBI (MsD and PhD) was approved and classified by Coordination of Improvement of Personnel of Higher Education (CAPES) of Brazil in 2010 after the analysis of the program proposition (See more).
