PhD - Doctorate Degree

     The Doctoral Course of the Post-Graduate Program in Sciences and Biotechnology (PPBI) is a 4-year programme that aims to train human resources for teaching and research, capable of promoting scientific and technological development in various areas of biology involving Science and Biotechnology. Thus, the program PPBI-UFF was organized to provide options for advanced training, not only in research but also in the improvement of Higher Education Teaching, stimulating the establishment of graduate skills and continued academic training.

         The Ph.D. formed in the PPBI includes studies that may range from obtaining bioactive products and biological evaluation to the application of technology and knowledge generated, with systematic studies in order to acquire a solid background in biology and technology. (See PPBI Research lines).

       The introduction to scientific work is enhanced by the doctoral student at PPBI as evidenced by undertaking of a pre-project, involving planning of research work that represents an original contribution to the state of the art of the  selected subject / theme. The pre-project should provide the breadth and depth expected in studies designed to result in a doctoral thesis and published work, a fact that will be directly reflected in academic work to be defended in PPBI. So the thesis will be the document that will present the results of an original experimental and/or scientific study, making a real contribution to the selected area.

      It will be essential for the candidate to show skills and experience in research. A good academic record is essential for entry into the course, as this will develop the professional skills and abilities to:

- Work with integrity, responsibility and ethics.

- To keep up to date, including using new tools, recognizing local sources for updates.

- Mobilize resources of spoken language (oral presentations) and writing (abstracts and articles) in order to participate in contextualized interactions present in PPBI and other local knowledge (eg conferences).

- Work independently and creatively, showed by the creation of new knowledge validated by publications in scientific or good journals or patents.

- Write in a foreign language in terms of structure and applications in the area (eg, summaries, articles and patents).

- To think analytically and critically about the processes of teaching and learning Science and Biotechnology;

- Integrate teaching and research simultaneously and continuously in order to form the Doctororate of Science and Biotechnology with a scientific-humanistic perspective.

To summarize, the Ph.D. program is intended to allow further development of the doctoral student including:

- The development of autonomy, critical knowledge and independence, using experience, enabling the use of the information and communication technologies applied to Science and Biotechnology;

- The emergence of authorship, teaching the doctoral students to be the main author of the data report;

- High academic standards in line with the national scientific and technological development of the country, especially in the understanding of biological systems with an applied vision, without losing sight of the whole system, and participating in the current growing market demand.

       The Doctorate course is organized to provide options for advanced training not only in research but also in the improvement of Higher Education Teaching, stimulating the establishment of graduate skills in their area and related areas. This process emphasizes multidisciplinarity, inter-institutional collaboration and  the pursuit of academic excellence, aligned with the mission of the postgraduate program. The preparation of the Ph.D. in PPBI does not ignore the demand for qualified professionals by the Brazilian market in the Science and Biotechnology areas. They will be aware of the current job market and have the ability to generate answers to new questions that arise.

        Finally, at all levels of study, the Post-Graduate Program in Sciences and Biotechnology also includes the theoretical context of the entrepreneurial process, as well as practical aspects such as obtaining funding for projects, the principle of formation and operation of companies that use biology as a manufacturing base (Genomics and Proteomics, Laboratory Materials, Biotechnology, etc.) and connection with venture capital.
